Christian Voices have received another review of Ezra, our last play.
John Mewett has written to us about our performance at Beulah Baptist Church.
My first impression was how wonderful to be back in the Beulah Baptist Church, so warm and snug on a wild, cold and windy night.
Now whether it is because of the venue or the length of time since the last Christian Voices production, but Ezra was by far my favourite production yet
The dialogue was clearly heard, with the stepped design of the pews it meant that all the cast where visible throughout the performance, this was also greatly aided by the spectacular stage lighting, very unusual but most welcome in a church willing to use its space for these sort of events.
The part of Ezra was well performed by Chris King particularly showing Ezra’s shock and almost disbelief that people could doubt the word of God
Once again Graham Payne threw himself into the part of Solomon, fantastic clear voice and stage presence always a joy to watch, another mention must be made to Abigail performed by Caroline Cox, a very sympathetic approach to a this character.
The complicated role of Daron was played by the writer Alan Young, a challenging call in these politically correct times, very difficult to pitch as both the attitude of Daron and some of the other citizens show what would be considered today as having a level of racial prejudice, although this seems to have been resolved with Ezra’s intervention and the invitation of dinner with the in-laws suggested that more tranquil times lay ahead for this well played family with the acceptance of Daron into the their fold.
The music was once again a joy; the songs and their production just get better and better. A really full sound now with the addition of the full and well balanced rhythm section now well bedded in and the singing was clear and a joy to listen to.
The sound balance was better than some gigs I have attended recently by bands with professional sound engineers, and audience participation! What ever next! If only clapping along (maybe singing the chorus next time!!)
Overall a very enjoyable evening and by the impression I got from the people around me I wasn’t alone
Looking forward to the next production
Thanks, John. We appreciate the feedback.
